Cinderella

Once upon a time there lived an unhappy young girl. Her mother was dead and her father had married a widow with two daughters. Her stepmother didn't like her one little bit. All her kind thoughts and loving touches were for her own daughters. Nothing was too good for them – dresses, shoes, delicious food, soft beds, and every home comfort.

(Había una vez una joven chica infeliz. Su madre había muerto y su padre se había casado con una viuda que tenía dos hijas. Su madrastra la odiaba.  Todas sus buenas palabras y sus gestos cariñosos iban dirigidos a sus hijas. Nada era bueno para ellas: ni los vestidos, ni los zapatos, ni la comida deliciosa, ni siquiera su confortable casa.)


But, for the poor unhappy girl, there was nothing at all. No dresses, only her stepsisters’ hand-me-downs. No lovely dishes, nothing but scraps. No rest and no comfort. She had to work hard all day. Only when evening came was she allowed to sit for a while by the fire, near the cinders. That’s why everybody called her Cinderella.

(Pero para la pobre y triste chica no había nada. Ni vestidos, sólo los que sus hermanastras le cedían, ni platos bonitos, sólo los trozos. Y lo peor, ni descanso ni comodidad. Tenía que tyrabajar todo el día. Sólo por la noche le permitían sentarse al fuego diurante un rato, cerca de las cenizas. Y por eso todo el mundo la llamaba Cenicienta.)


 Cinderella used to spend long hours all alone talking to the cat. The cat said, "Miaow", which really meant, "Cheer up! You have something neither of your stepsisters has and that is beauty." It was quite true. Cinderella, even dressed in old rags, was a lovely girl. While her stepsisters, no matter how splendid and elegant their clothes, were still clumsy, lumpy and ugly and always would be.

(Cenicienta solía pasar muchas horas hablando con el gato. Él le decía "Miau", lo que en realidad quería decir "Anímate!". "Tienes algo que ninguna de tus hermanastras tiene y es la belleza". Esto era cierto. Incluso vestida con harapos viejos era una chica encantadora, mientras que sus hermanastras, sin importar lo espléndidas y elegantes que fuesen sus vestidos, eran torpes y feas y siempre lo serían.)

 One day, beautiful new dresses arrived at the house. A ball was to be held at the palace and the stepsisters were getting ready to go. Cinderella didn't even dare ask if she could go too. She knew very well what the answer would be: "You? You're staying at home to wash the dishes, scrub the floors and turn down the beds for your stepsisters. They will come home tired and very sleepy". Cinderella sighed, "Oh dear, I'm so unhappy!". and the cat murmured, "Miaow"..

(Un día llegaron a la casa varios vestidos bonitos y nuevos. Se iba a celebrar un baile en el palacio y las hermanastras se estaban preparando para ir. Cenicienta ni siquiera preguntó si ella podía ir también. Sabía muy bien que la respuesta sería: "¿Tú? Tú te quedas en casa lavando los platos, limpiando los suelos y haciendo las camas para tus hermanastras. Ellas vendrán cansadas y muy dormidas. Cenicienta sollozaba "¡Oh, dios, qué infeliz soy!, y el gato murmuraba "Miau"....)

 Suddenly something amazing happened. As Cinderella was sitting all alone, there was a burst of light and a fairy appeared. "Don't be alarmed, Cinderella",. said the fairy. "I know you would love to go to the ball. And so you shall!". "How can I, dressed in rags?", Cinderella replied. "The servants will turn me away!".

(De repente ocurrió algo sorprendente. Mientras estaba sentada sola, hubo una explosión de luz y apareció un hada. "No te alarmes, Cenicienta", dijo el hada. "Sé que te encantaría ir al baile. Y por eso vas a ir!".  "¿Cómo voy a ir, vestida con harapos?", replicó Cenicienta. "¡Los sirvientes no me dejarán pasar!.)

 The fairy smiled. With a flick of her magic wand Cinderella found herself wearing the most beautiful dress she had ever seen. "Now for your coach", said the fairy. "A real lady would never go to a ball on foot! Quick! Get me a pumpkin!". "Oh of course", said Cinderella, rushing away. Then the fairy turned to the cat. "You, bring me seven mice, and, remember they must be alive!".

(El hada sonrió. Con un giro de su varita mágica Cenicienta se encontró vistiendo el vestido más bonito que había visto. "Y ahora tu carruaje", dijo el hada. "¡Una dama real nunca iría a un baile a pie! ¡Rápido! ¡Consígueme una calabaza! "Por supuesto", dijo Cenicienta, dándose prisa. Luego el hada se dirigió al gato diciéndole "¡Tú, tráeme siete ratones, y que estén vivos!")


Cinderella soon returned with the pumpkin and the cat with seven mice he had caught in the cellar. With a flick of the magic wand the pumpkin turned into a sparkling coach. Six of the mice became white horses, while the seventh mouse turned into a coachman in a smart uniform and carrying a whip. Cinderella could hardly believe her eyes.


(Cenicienta volvió pronto con la calabaza y el gato con los siete ratones cazados en la bodega. Con un giro de la varita el hada convirtió la acalabaza en una carroza brillante Seis de los ratones se convirtieron en caballos blancos, mientras que el último se convirtió en un cochero con un elegante uniforme que llevaba un látigo. Ceenicienta no podía creer lo que veían sus ojos.)

 But the fairy, above all things, told her not to stay until after midnight. "If you stay one minute longer, the coach will become a pumpkin again, your horses and the coachman will become mice, and your clothes will become just rags".


(Pero el hada, por encima de todas las cosas, le dijo que no podía quedarse después de medianoche. "Si te quedas un minuto más, la carroza volverá a ser una calabaza, el cochero y los caballos volverán a ser ratones y tu vestido volverá a convertirse en harapos".)

 Cinderella promised her she would leave the ball before midnight. And away she went full of joy and happiness.

(Cenicienta le prometió que dejaría el baile antes de esa hora. Y se fue llena de felicidad y alegría.)


 Cinderella had a wonderful time at the ball until she heard the first stroke of midnight. Suddenly, she remembered the fairy's warning, and without a word of goodbye she slipped from the Prince's arms and ran down the steps. As she ran she lost one of her slippers, but not for a moment did she dream of stopping to pick it up. If the last stroke of midnight were to sound, what a disaster that would be! So out Cinderella fled and vanished into the night.

(Cenicienta se lo estaba pasando muy bien en el baile hasta que oyó la primera campanada de la medianoche. De repente, se acordó de la advertencia del hada, y sin una palabra de despedida huyó de los brazos del príncipe y bajó corriendo las escaleras. Mientras corría perdió una de sus zapatillas, pero no pensó en ningún momento en parar a recogerla. Si sonara la última campanada de la medianoche, ¡qué desastre sería! Así que huyó y desapareció en la noche.)

 The Prince, who was now madly in love with her, picked up the slipper and said to his ministers, “Go and search everywhere for the girl whose foot this slipper fits. I will never be content until I find her!”

(El príncipe, que estaba locamente enamorado de ella, recogió la zapatilla y le dijo a sus ministros: "Id y buscad por todas partes a la chica cuyo pie esta zapatilla se adapte. No estaré satisfecho hasta que la encuentre!")

 So the ministers tried the slipper on the foot of every girl in the land until only Cinderella was left.

 (Así, los ministros probaron el zapato en los pies de cada chica del reino hasta que sólo quedó Cenicienta.)


"That awful untidy girl simply cannot have been at the ball",. snapped the stepmother. "Tell the Prince he ought to marry one of my two daughters! Can't you see how ugly Cinderella is?". But, to everyone's amazement, the shoe fitted perfectly.

("Esta chica desordenada y horrible ni siquiera ha ido al baile", gritó la madrastra."¡Dile al príncipe que debe casarse con una de mis dos hijas! ¿No vés lo fea que es Cenicienta?". Pero, para sorpresa de todos, el zapato se adaptaba perfectamente.)

Suddenly the fairy appeared and waved her magic wand. In a flash, Cinderella appeared in a splendid dress,shining with youth and beauty. Her stepmother and stepsisters gaped at her in amazement.


(De pronto apareció el hada y agitó su varita mágica .Al instante, Cenicienta apareció en un vestido espléndido, resplandeciente de juventud y belleza. Su madrastra y sus hermanastras la miraron llenas de asombro.)

Then the ministers said, "Come with us Cinderella! The Prince is waiting for you."

(Entonces los ministros dijeron, "¡Ven con nosotros Cenicienta!" "¡El príncipe te está esperando!")
And so Cinderella married the Prince and lived happily ever. As for the cat, he just said "Miaow!"

(Y así Cenicienta y el príncipe se casaron y vivieron felices para siempre, mientras que el gato sólo dijo "¡Miau!)
